It's hard to find community in a sea of voices, isn't it? When everyone in the world is trying to talk over each other, where is your place? Who are your people? Despite that struggle, I've still managed to find a whole trove of friends that I stick around on Discord, but something still felt missing..
To anyone who already knows me and is discovering this website that I sent to them, I would like to introduce you to a special place on the internet, a place where you can be the master of your own world. A place where websites are not owned by massive corporations that keep you drowned in an algorithm catered to your worst impulses. A place where you're encouraged to build something meaningful and you actually have the avenue for it to mean something to others. A place where there is a whole universe of people's worlds of meaning to explore.
This place I speak of is called "The Indie Web," and it's always been here. Neocities just makes it much easier to become a part of it. What's different now, though, is people are getting tired of inauthenticity. There is a growing need, a longing, to return to a form of the internet that was more independently created and harbored community. That need is manifested and met in the form of The Web Revival movement. It is now easier than ever before to learn how to code HTML and make your own website. Thanks to Neocities.org, which will host your website for you for free as long as the files remain under 1GB, there has been a flock, a stream of newcomers here looking to follow this movement toward the independent web, building their websites, their new homes, their worlds.
It is customary to provide links to other people's sites on YOUR website. We all link to each other! Here is my wall of these 'link buttons.' Please feel free to explore, my new friends worked so hard on these:
let me know if you make a website so I can add it to the big wall here!
Speaking of making a website of your own, if you want to do it and you have absolutely no experience in coding at all, there is nothing to worry about! There are so many resources available online that can teach you. In fact, you can learn as you go and gradually build and update your site as you are learning these things. To get started, all you need to do is jump to https://neocities.org/ and make your free account so you can get right into it. As for the learning part, I started with this place, which provided me with a detailed rundown of the basics of writing HTML and CSS. From there, I just looked up anything that I needed to know, and I mostly found that in YouTube tutorials. I even compiled a playlist of all the tutorials that I've seen plus some extra to cover missing information, and you can watch it in order to learn everything that I know! The link to it is right here. Other than that though, I bid you good luck, and happy websurfing! Some day we will all be webmasters..
